Hard Drives

Contrary to popular belief, so that you will be tempted to purchase the extended warranty, most components inside today's computers come with warranty periods exceeding one year. For example, hard drives carry at least a two (2) year warranty direct from the manufacturer, and for some drive drives this warranty could be as long as five (5) years.

Hard drives take the most punishment inside a computer. It is a small (approximately 3.5 inches in diameter) disc, spinning at over 300 miles an hour, with a head similar to the needle in old record players gilding over, but not touching, the surface of the drive.

The device is susceptible to shock even from the most innocuous movement of the computer case while the system is running. This may be why, of all the components, this would be the first one to show problems.

If you are suspect one of your hard drives is having a problem, the FIRST thing you MUST do is create backup copies of your data, preferably onto optical media, or a secondary drive in your computer. Only after backup copies are made, and verified, will it be safe to investigate your drive for possible errors or defect.
